September 1, 2011:

A series of 3 conference calls on the Future of Nursing will be offered by PlexusCalls. All of them will take place at 12-1 Eastern Time. The call in number is 641-715-3300 and the access code is 485743#. All calls will be recorded and will be available at www.plexusinstitute.org The series are:

  1. September 19th “IOM Future of Nursing Report and the Nursing Education Highway” by Dr. Liana Orsolini-Hain.
  2. October 17th “Appreciation, Influence and Control (AIC)” by William E. Smith author and principle of Organizing for Development and Cynthia Hornberger, professor at Washburn University.
  3. November 7th “How to Influence One’s Own Personal Style, Choice and Decision to Move the Future of Nursing Agenda Ahead” by Phyllis Kritek a nationally and internationally know nurse scholar, writer speaker and consultant.

Documents to help educate state legislators:

August 10, 2011

  • CA Action Coalition Leadership Council has met 3 times this year, with 2 more meeting scheduled.  (Note the name change from Regional Action Coalition (RAC) to California Action Coalition (CA AC).
  • Mary Dickow  is now the Statewide Coordinator for this work. She is an Associate Director at the Center of Health Professions at the University of California, San Francisco but will assuming this work full time in August.
  • 6 of the 8 work groups have leads or co-leads appointed.  Each of these groups is working on one of the 8 recommendations from the IOM report.
  • In addition to the work groups, because of the size of the State, 8 geographic areas have been identified and 1 or 2 Regional Champions have volunteered to spearhead the work in that area.
  • The web site is till temporarily housed on the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing site, but plans are in process to develop a robust, dedicated site that will allow the rapid and up to date dissemination of information about this dynamic work.  On the current web page you can still find the link to the survey for participation, communication toolkit resources, and other general information materials.  The link is

  • On August 4, 2011, a Town Hall meeting for the public was held in Sacramento cosponsored by the CA Action Coalition, AARP, and the UC Davis Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing.
  • On June 29, 2011, the Gannett Healthcare Group sponsored the Future of Nursing Day of Dialogue.  A panel of nurses and nursing leaders held a panel discussion with a live audience in Washington, D.C.  This was also live-streamed and allowed for questions from the live audience and those attending via the Internet.

This is Wave II of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action’s Action Coalitions (ACs). The 10 new states are Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, New Mexico, Utah, Virginia, and Washington. The 5-pilot states are California, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersy and New York. Read More.

The 8 recommendations from the IOM Study are:

  • Remove Scope of Practice Barriers
  • Expand opportunities for nurses to lead and diffuse collaborative improvement efforts
  • Implement nurse residency program
  • Increase the proportion of nurses with a BS degree to 80% by 2020
  • Double the number of nurses with a doctorate by 2020
  • Ensure that nurses engage in lifelong learning
  • Prepare and enable nurses to lead change to advance health
